I am ready to put up scenic backdrops on my layout.  I am looking at commercial backdrops that depict cities, residential and industrial scenes.  The most common suppliers seem to be ScenicKing and Backdrop Warehouse.  My questions are:

1--Are those two suppliers reliable?

2-Are they pretty close to O scale when used as a backdrop?

3-Are there any other suppliers worth considering?

Thanks for any help you can give---Andy

I just looked at the Backdrop Warehouse website again. Looks as bad as ever. There are a few here who were successful in ordering from him. I'm not part of that elite group. The backdrops are beautiful, but I cannot imagine worse customer service (Insulting and RUDE).

There are other sources. I'm certain the brain trust here will weigh in.

I have used others with varying personalities and web site ease, but in the end the product it's self is what I will be living with.

The Backdrop Warehouse product is absolutely the best in the field IMO.  You will be working with a photographic artist.  This is more of a process than a simple transaction.  He wants the same as you, the very best application for the your layout

The focus, the prospective, the coloring,  the even perpendicular subject (NOT just a panarama camera shot!) very high quality paper.  No matter where you stand the view is straight ahead not the edge of a panned shot.

I creased/ wrinkled one section and it came out perfectly flat upon mounting.  The "paper" has more of a cloth feel to it.

Yes the web site is involved but so is the product offering.  He has a wide variety of product line enough for any budget.  He even gives a rebate when you send in finished photos of your installation.

Matching from panel to panel is very even.

If you want a high quality finished product that will sweep you off your feet, spend some time on the site.

It is very difficult to use words to properly convey what a wall of Backdrop Warehouse will do for your RR.

The product is so high quality that you can install the top and bottom edges with Velcro and rubber cement the seams for easy removal and reuse on another layout.  Nothing else comes close IMO.

Challenge your self to invest some time and patience on the website.

Yes, Backdrop Warehouse's website is "difficult".  But, I am very happy I discovered it when first building my layout as the quality of the photos is outstanding and the selection of scenes is without a peer.  I wanted Western scenes, living in Arizona, and at that time, he was about the only person with photos of scenes that looked natural for us here.  He was great to work with as I bought a lot of footage and he made sure the sky color matched from scene to scene and even blended the adjacent scenes together when they were not a sequence.  Pricy, yes, but in my opinion they are still the best.

We used Backdrop Warehouse (BW) when we put ours up about 8 years ago. Yes, the website was not the easiest one to navigate, but we did work our way through it and had a good idea what we needed before we called the owner.  [If you start on the Model RR page at the BW site and work your way all the way through that section, it actually does make sense.] Our questions were around confirming what we thought we needed and how to attach it to the wall. Maybe we hit the owner on a good day, but he was not difficult to deal with at all  - as we had been led to believe from other comments. FWIW, he almost seemed to appreciate the fact that that we did make it through the (albeit busy) website.

The best advice he gave us was regarding using rubber cement to mount the backdrop so that we would be able to take it down in the future if needed. Sure enough, with our move to a new house, we were able to take it down with no problems, and re-apply it.  The only mistake that we made was buying way too much rubber cement; a little bit on the back surface of the backdrop (and none on the wall, or it can NOT be removed) worked great and held perfectly for 7 1/2 years when we moved it.

I have not used any other backdrop products, but the BW product worked great and looks awesome - it makes for a dramatic backdrop for the layout and generates a lot of positive comments from visitors.  The texture, color, detail, and quality were more than worth the effort to work through the website.  I would go there again if I ever needed more background material.
