looking at a scrap operation as a new addition to our club layout. just wanted to see what some others have done for inspiration.

As I model the WW2 era, scrapping operations would be very fast and the remaining stuff hauled off right away. The only thing I have is the remains of a badly-broken Bachmann 2-6-0 I bought off eBay (to get the tender, which I turned into a water car). No way it would ever run again, so I pulled apart everything that didn't look right and rusted the heck out of what was left:
Both are interesting. I like them both.

Check out BAR GP7 #63's contribution to this weeks Switcher Saturday post. He's got a great looking scrap pile and scratch built gantry crane.

Thank you

It is still a work in progress. I am replacing the cork road bed on the one side with a concrete pad plus there are still a lot more details / figures to add but you can see the gist of it. It is sort of a scrap operation and container loading in one due to a lack of layout space.

Joe, very nice and thanks for sharing. How well do you like that gantry crane. I’ve never messed with them before. How well does it work? This scrap operation will be going on a module for a club layout so we’ll be space challenged as well. One of the things we we’re trying to decided is to go with a mounted or moveable gantry crane like yours. Again thanks for sharing it’s really nice. Share some pics when you get farther along with it. We’ll do the same.
Roo - that is a whole lot of junk!

A "Lotta Junk" my left foot!
I bet ya there are some 2 rail Scalers / 3 rail Scale looking at that pile and saying that's a Motherload of San Juans and Intermountains! I could use those!

Jeremy:
It is my first ever modern operating accessory (not counting the gate-man when I was a kid!). The crane is Lionel TMCC controlled. One can move it back and forth along the track, rotate the cab in both directions, raise or lower the hook motor, and turn the magnet on and off. The only manual feature is the position of the boom which is controlled by the wheel on the back of the cab. Also a Gargraves gantry track is needed. They are easy to cut to desired length. Connect track power/ground to the two outside rails and you are ready to program the crane. I used the ACC function on my CAB 2. I plan on having a whole lot of fun with this especially if Roo would part with some of his scrap!

Awesome. Thanks for the info. Sounds like a lot of fun.

I did offer them for free on another forum and there was a lot of them, but nobody wanted to pay the postage so they are now being consumed by the BOF !
I actually have two scrap yards one at one end of the layout and the other at the other end one feeds the other.
Here is the other one gondolas full of "scrap" are moved around the layout to end up at the BOF for melting down.

And talking about scrap yards, here is an oldy for you. This one shared space with a cement unloading facility, two tracks, two industries to switch and look at the space six feet by two feet! Way to go! Ha Ha .
Sorry for the quality of the photos long time ago, old camera, no experiance, lousy backdrop and one member on a forum, not this one, even said the scrap yard was to clean and tidy! But the Railroad worked fine. You have those days, You can't win em all! Roo.

Have you ever posted a photo survey of your entire layout?
