I use the "FOR SALE"  and other types of signs from Walmart and Hardware stores.

The signs come is different sizes (most are larger than the sheets from Hobby stores) and are .020 to .100 in thickest.  And the cost can be as low as $1.00 per sheet.

Here is a few pictures of things that I have built with the signs..

Hood on the slug is built from a FOR SALE sign.

I use 1/8 inch tempered Masonite for building walls.  Tempered Masonite is available in one or two smooth sides.  It is available in 4 ft x 8 ft sheets and HD or Lowes will cut it smaller for free and maybe even as sell 1/2 sheets.

I find it easy to work with and windows and doors can be cut out with a powered hand jig or saber saw or preferably a stationary powered scroll/jig saw.

The round house and building in the rear, shown below,  were built using one sided smooth tempered Masonite.  The rough side was used, rough side up, for the roofs.

The picture below shows the brick paper used on the sides in typical 1950s construction methods.  Clear plastic from toy packages and auto pin striping were used for windows.  Ladder was made from N gauge track.
