nice and interesting! I wonder when the co's started to cover the retorts? All the pics I see are exposed retorts.

H.S.Curve:   The HO kit advertised in an old MR, with a poor picture, had the retorts

uncovered, as did scratchbuilt one offered on eBay that I emailed the guy about and

he said he had visited about 3 of them in Louisiana and elsewhere.  However, the one

with the best photos of retorts I found on the net, and I think a forumite steered me

to them, was covered, as were the ones in an Albuquerque plant I found on the net.

I would have thought hotter climates would have had them open, and colder enclosed,

but Albuquerque can get hot, and I would guess these were a little cooler than a

blast furnace, but still unpleasant....

When my wife moved here from Mississippi she went to work in the office of Atlantic Wood Industries here in Portsmouth where they (at one time) creosoted poles.  Now they're a Superfund site

Google them and you'll see a photo of their GE 25-tonner they used and a diagram of the layout of the plant itself with railroad tracks.  I have a couple of photos of the engine I took when she worked there, but the ones online look the same as mine.
