Although I am not there yet, I am always thinking ahead. This helps me to think things out, and have a plan going g into steps ahead. There are a lot of beautiful trees out there without bases. Am wondering how everyone secures these trees to the hillsides for various substrates. I know all trees are not perfect. However, I prefer the vertical over the leaning. Lol

Any place I have trees has at least 1/2 of foam underneath the top layers. Punch a hole with an awl ( smaller diameter than the tree) and insert. No need for glue.  Every once in a while when I need a smaller hole I just insert a thin piece of foam along with the tree.  IMO - the depth of the foam is what holds the tree upright. The bigger the tree the thicker foam is needed - ie 1/2 inch diameter, 14 inches tall. I put the entire trunk into the foam.

For foam, I use WS Scenic Glue - dries clear, holds fast, not messy or time consuming like hot glue, and a little dab will do you. Use the non-twist end of a drill bit of the correct diameter to punch the hole by hand.

Probably good for 500 trees or more with one $9 bottle. Also, works well for telephone poles, light poles, lanterns and other scenic materials in foam.
