Are track signals always placed on a specific side of the track? Always on the right (engineers) side.

When practical they should be on the right side. Doesn't always happen though. When NS went to "Stick" signals on our district, many of the intermediate signals that had one signal in each direction on its proper right hand side now have only one signal mast with signal heads for both directions on the one mast.
Some signals were place on the left hand side because of a curve or terrain interfering with their view.

On the UP's double track mains, (ex Mopac,) the old signal bridges were replaced by signals on the field side of the tracks. (one on north side of north main and one on the south side of the south main). Usually a signal head facing each direction is mounted on the signal mast.
