Hi Gang,
Looking to build a ski lift but am curious to know what some have used for poles. I am thinking dowels may be a decent solution but would like other opinions.

Schedule 40 PVC pipe would be hollow in case you wat to run blinking lights on the top. You can get it down to at lease 1/2 " maybe smaller. Any home supply store.

I am converting 1:43 cars using a motor/magnet (re: faller) atm but found that one needs a high roof for the motor and one that has good torque. Car is a bit too heavy with current set up - no room for batteries unless i take out interior
You can find steel and brass pipe and tube both much smaller, yet plenty strong.
