Just curious what people use to fill up a diesel with smoke fluid. Seems I get more on the outside of the engine than I do in the resevoir. I've got a needleless syringe I've tried to use, but that just gets the fluid on the outside of the engine alot quicker and with much a greater splash effect. Any good ideas out there?

I normally use the little funnel that came with the locomotive, and drip the fluid into this from a Mega-Steam dropper. I also have a syringe with a blunt needle that came with a Seuthe smoke unit. This works very well too.
Sorry if this sounds silly, but are you making sure that the smoke unit is turned off before you add fluid? That's one of the most common reasons for splashes.

Megasteam sells a needlepoint bottle dispenser for smoke that works well. Only downside is that it takes more drops to fill the smoke cavity. However, you aren't spilling the fluid all over the place. Good luck!

I also use the Mega -steam Squirter , I believe this is what was shown on the Lionel smoke unit video's also. Quick and easy.
Hi Jpos. If you have a local dealer nearby, they should be able to help you get some funnels. The Lionel part number is 610-1209-204 and the list price is $1.
Your local dealer should be able to help with the Mega-Steam needle applicator bottles too.

Any of the needlepoint bottles (megasteam, etc...) work well. I dont know what the droplet conversion is vs. a medicine dropper, but its probably about 3 to 1. I just squeeze the bottle and count "thousand one, thousand two" and it seems to be good for a while.
It wouldnt be too hard to figure out the exact conversion rate to the smaller needlepoint drops if you wanted to, but most smoke units hold far more than the recommended amount before they're truly flooded.

That is why I do NOT use the smoke units in any of my diesels. In fact, a number of my diesels have had the smoke units either removed or disabled. I found it is to much of a PITA to fill them, fluid tends to go everywhere EXCEPT into the smoke unit. Also, I had an incident where the glue holding the "channel" inside the shell cracked pouring fluid all over the boards causing electronic as well as cosmetic (leaked to the outside damaging the paint) damage.
I prefer a funnel over a needle. The trouble with the needle-topped bottle is that you can't see how many drops are going into the unit. I have one of the Lionel mini-funnels that came with a Legacy locomotive and a couple of little blue ones I got from the housewares department at a big Ace Hardware. The ones from Ace were a bit big for some of the diesels; I shaved down the pointy end with an X-acto knife and now they work fine.
An Ear funnel works good too. I use them for my steamers. You can buy one or ask your doctor if you can have one the next time you visit.

I have the Megasteam needle points for my diesels and they work great! What's nice about the ear funnel is you can get the fluid in a little deeper closer to the wick material.
Hello all. I think I've solved my problem by using an empty LaBelle needle tipped oil bottle. I simply unscrew the top cap that hold's the needle, put in the recommended amount of smoke drops from my large bottle and replace the cap. With a small LED flashlight, I look down thru the top of the exhaust pipe or stack, locate the top of the smoke machine's manifold, and insert the needle into it. Once it's in place, I slowly squeeze the bottle until all the liquid is gone out of the bottle. Work's every time. Thought I'd throw out my two cents worth. Bill
Small metal smoke fluid funnels can be purchased from any American Flyer parts vendor. Back in the day Gilbert included one in each smoking steam loco set.

I cut the end off of the capsule of smoke fluid that comes with some engines. The capped end makes a perfect funnel.
I use a old American Flyer funnel. There available from flyer parts dealers. You can go into the S gauge forum and ask if someone wants to sell one.
I thought that diesels aren't supposed to smoke! Only steam engines do this. May be diesels with worn-out motors smoke.
mega-steam dispenser;
The device used might depend on the engine. I only have one smoking MTH diesel (A GP20) and for it:
* the Mega Steam needle won't fit
* I have tried 3 funnels - all way too big
* I landed up buying a packet of hypodermic needles (In PA they are now available without a prescription). I put 20 drops from my fluid dispenser into a small cup and sucked it up into the needle. I marked the spot on the body of the needle. Now, all that I do is stick my hypo into the fluid container and withdraw the plunger til the fluid reaches the mark.

My Lionel CC2 came with a small funnel to fill up the whistle and blow down smoke unit but I ended up using it only a few times as the whistle and blow down smoke unit ended up crapping out maybe 3 months after I bought it. This was my 2nd replacement and it runs decently so I decided to just keep it and not have the extra effects.

If any of you are friendly with your local Dentist, he has some kind of injector device. I think it's called a 'jett'(?). It's a fine tipped syringe looking, that you would have to load up with fluid. Ask him for one and tell him what you are using it for; I'm sure he would be delighted, many Dentist are train collectors. They love the detail aspects of our trains.
here's an additional source
OH!!!!!!!!! just thought of something!!!!!!!
another side note, when using those plastic
funnels, dont shove them all the way into the smoke unit
so it hits any elements inside. The plastic melts.
Found that out by experience, pushing it into a postwar
smoke unit.

Here's the mother load...........take your pick!
Those little "jetts" that Dentists have are used for
caulking guns and filling root canals, brings back bad
memories.
