I recently acquired a Railking RS-1 30-2626-1 from a friend. It has no smoke unit even though the manual makes reference to one. Can anyone give me the part number for a smoke unit that was used these engines? Also I assume one of the white connectors closest to the smoke unit location is where it would be connected. Is that the case?

Gary, I was hoping to get a number for a smoke unit used in the later RS-1s. I know the one I have never had a smoke unit as even the stack is plugged. I couldn't find a parts listing for any of the RS-1s shown at the MTH website otherwise I would have just ordered one. I guess the next step is to contact MTH.

It might not be as simple as just adding the smoke unit.  Your engine is from 2005 and the one with smoke is 2010.  Somewhere in there they switched from from 5v boards to 3v boards.  I'd ask a lot of questions of a good tech before spending money on parts.

I just checked mine.  They're both 3v systems.  While you're at it, you might consider adding the number board lights, new speaker and the newer personality file, if possible.  The newer unit has far better sound than the early one.  It might be that the newer version has the 2mb board.

Your best bet would be an e-mail to MTH on this or post some pictures of the chassis and shell.  Then Gary can post his so board location can be verified.  You would need the smoke unit with correct stack, a stack gasket or assembly for the shell, the smoke unit 4 pin connector harness and then possibly a bracket depending on how the smoke unit is mounted.  The only way to get all this will be from MTH after a look at the 2010 version as compared to yours.  Maybe Gary can post some photos of his.  G

I thought the move to 3V came in the 2008 timeframe.  If so, that would make that a later engine.

I had heard the move to 3V was much earlier. FWIW the batteries are a pair of double A's and the board petty much matches what is shown in the current DCS kit upgrade manual.

Now that I have seen the connections to the board, two for fan, two for the resistor and two for an on/off switch I am thinking I can use one of my Lionel fan smoke units.

Does anyone know off hand what value of smoke resistor MTH uses with the 3V boards?

Pete,  It is 2 16 ohm resistors in parallel for a total of 8 ohms.  So the resistor should be about 8 ohms.  You also need to ensure that the resistor does not ground out via the chassis as this will blow the MTH circuit.  Not sure which Lionel smoke unit you are using so it is prudent to ensure the smoke unit frame is not part of the engine chassis ground.

You need to ensure that any of the Lionel electronics on that board are out of the connection.  The MTH circuit goes directly to the smoke resistors and the smoke fan.

John, there was a transition period when 3V started for Premier, and by 2008 all units had them.  G

The 2005 and 2010 are catalog dates.  Both have the "square" charging port.

Good info, thank you. I have a few fan Lionel driven units plus a selection of resistors. I will make sure both leads are not connected to the chassis. I'll post pics of the electronics to make sure its 3V but I assumed the earlier boards had a different form factor.
