I'm upgrading my old Lionel T1 with a cruise commander to make it comparable with legacy.  The old style smoke unit's heating element connects directly to track power. Running at a constant 20v seems to be frying the heating element inside. I'm using the old style 27 ohm element. I'm not sure how to solve this.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I considered that but thought it was for fan driven units to sync it with the chuffing. It it's a constant 12 volts my issue is solved - almost. Now I'll need a 7 wire tether between the tender and the engine.  Any idea where I could purchase one?

Don;

Why not get an MTH 10 wire PS-2 tether and socket? Ready made for the purpose.

The smoke output from the Cruise Commander does not chuff, it's just a constant output voltage.  There is a chuff switch input to the RailSounds board for the sound, but if you're going to synchronize the chuff with smoke, you have to "roll your own" with the Cruise Commander.
