Hi,
Is there a smoke unit that I can install on the layout to simulate a fire in a forest scene I have? I have one of those log fire with flickering red LEDs but it would be cool if I could place a smoke unit under/near it to simulate a smokey fire.

I would look for a Seuthe Smoke generator . Typically not well regarded for O Gauge Locomotive smoke units, but probably a good choice for your campfire. You may find one cheap from someone who has changed one out for a fan driven smoke unit.
My issue with those and other modern units is running them dry they fail.
( Though I think circuits are available to prevent it now)
A PW element and custom or modified chamber for natural heat flow would be involved for me.
I have one in a silicone pill holder that has done fine without melting. Fits like a glove.
I bought some little timer relays on the bay to run that stuff, push buttton runs for set time then shuts off. I dont want accessories just pumping out smoke for no reason unmonitored that way the kids can push the button and make something happen
I'd use a fan driven smoke unit. For lots of smoke, look for the MTH PS/1 smoke unit, it has all the logic to simply run on track power and pumps out a lot of smoke! Like Matt says, use a timer and the issue of running out of fluid and burning the wick should be a non-issue.
