Actually Chuck, the MTH smoke unit needs two power sources, DC for the fan and then a different voltage AC or DC for the heater.  A better choice is the MTH PS/1 smoke unit, just takes AC or DC at 8-18 volts and produces smoke.

Otherwise an MTH PS1 unit is the way to go.

If you dont want to use smoke fluid then a theatrical fog machine works, as would a water vaporizer. 

There are many variations, AA-0000062, AA-0000008, etc.  Most differ by what kind of stack extension they have, these were made before MTH standardized on the screw-in funnel design.
