Does anyone have good suggestions for temporary snow?  I'd like to dust the layout for the holidays, but I don't want to permanently mar any structures.  I've seen the Woodland Scenics flake snow in the shaker bottle but have never used it.  Any comments or suggestions would help.  Thanks.

Good afternoon, what kind of surface are you trying to cover ?

Is the surface smooth or rough ?

Woodland scenics makes a great snow product and comes in a shaker bottle as you mentioned. If you have just a small area you want to cover then yes this is the way to go.

After the holiday season is over you can simply vacuum it up with a vacuum sweeper.

If you are covering a vast area I would suggest going to a craft store, Michael's, Hobby Lobby, AC Moore  and get a couple bags of the finely ground stofoam that they sell in a bag.

A bag is usually around $5.00

This type of snow works well for covering up larger areas and again it can be vacuumed up after the season has come to an end.

Using either product try to keep it away from the tracks so the engines don't pick it up and get up inside the drive mechanisms and electronics.

I had have half of my railroad shutdown due to unwanted snow up inside the engine, not good !!!!!!!!!

One thing to remember before you get ready to vacuum the snow back up is to suck up a fabricate softer sheet into the vacuum before you start on the snow and this will break up the static electricity that can build up in a vacuum hose.

My layout is all winter and the snow was getting dirty looking so I tried this trick the other night and worked like a champ.

Now my layout is waiting for the first big snowfall of the year ( scheduled for this weekend when I get back home) and like in the winter season everything will be clean and white with a fresh covering of snow.

Of course until the steam engines go by and cover the countryside with cinders

Happy Holidays !!!!!

Since my layout is winter themed I use a combination of things. Artic white mats, Santa Snow, and yes baking soda.  Baking Soda is the easiest to clean up. Just remember if the surfaces are rough it will just take a little longer.

Here is a video o my layout. The buildings and the road surface I used the Santa snow.  On the tracks is where I used the baking Soda for the dusting of the ties and vacuum ups rather nicely.  The Santa Snow goes on wet but when it dries its pretty durable and doesn't yellow. It too will clean of but will take some work.  Below is one of my videos   Music by Guns and Roses.
