I think we live in a remarkable world.  My wife and I are on the Siulver Star right now, somewhere east/north of Raleigh, having left Cary NC at 8:15 this mor ing on our way to DC on business qand fun for a week, and my e-mail is working well.  The rocking motion of the train - the track isn't the smoothest here - makes it a bit difficult to work the keyboard, but still, this is fun!

Despite all our country's problems some things we get done are just wonderful! We have a beaituful new Amtrak station in downtown Cary that is clean and staffed by feriendly knowledgeable people, and improved service.  Wonderful! And being on the train and this forum at the same time is just alot of fun, as was ordering something from modeltrainstuff.com while on the train: I just had to do that.

Thanks, and have a great trip.

I'm using a Verizon broadband card.  Its spotty in places but workms well once we';re past Rocky mount and basically running parallel to I-95.

If you are in the DC area over the weekend, and are looking for some place to see O-Gauge trains, consider a short trip up to the Maryland State Fair Grounds, Timonium, MD. The Great Scale Show is being held there Saturday and Sunday. They usually have lots of nice display layouts including O-Gauge.

If you want to watch real trains, the new Long Bridge Park in Alexandria has a nice walkway overlooking the former RF&P.

With my daughter's family near Boston, and my son's family in D.C., we have been riding Amtrax quite a bit lately. I read as well as enjoy the sights (Hey, here comes the H*** Gate Bridge!), and my wife is on her laptop (now the non-Acela trains have wii). The cost is $118. RT to Boston from Philadelphia, and $59. RT to D.C.. Not bad, considering the price of gas and tolls.

Even better, our local train station (to Phila) is a 5 minute walk from our house, so we never have to get into a car. For seniors, a one way ticket to Phila. is 85 cents.

That is a great bridge - and a good picture of it, too.

The trio toiday was really nice.  We had a little room to ourselves which makes it so much quieter.  The trip seemed a bit smoother and quicker than in the past, and the food and service in the dining car was noticeable better.  It would be nice if it was Orient Express or Super Chief quality all around, but this is very good and we enjoyed it.  I know Amtrak gets beaten up a lot by folks but they've done a good job for us lately.

Hi Lee, I'm glad you are on a train having a wonderful time. Look at it as your reward for sharing your boat on the lake with us. I showed it to a few friends at work and they thought it was a great display.

If you guys get a chance try to head down to the Baltimore Inner Harbor, it's a wonderful shopping area. Also, it is near the B&O RR Museum.

Have fun, I wish I was on Amtrak heading south to DC.

Minor revision: Long Bridge Park is in Arlington, north of Alexandria.  Here's the webpage: http://www.arlingtonva.us/depa...thtractoverview.aspx

Thanks for mentioning it - I've been meaning to go take a look myself.

Here's an extract from Railpace with some nice photos of the park's railfan esplanade with trains: http://www.arlingtonva.us/depa...uments/file85242.pdf

(How many places are there where you can railfan from an honest-to-goodness esplanade?)

PGentieu, thanks, you are indeed correct. I misspoke. I am so used to going to Alexandria, I guess. Here's a photo from when I was there in Arlington shortly after the park opened.

Photo #2: This PV, "Dover Harbor," will also be in Washington Union Station over the weekend, well, at least Friday night. It is making round-trips to Newport News on Saturday and Sunday, carrying members of the National Capital Trackers O-gauge Railroad Club. It will be running each day on trains 67 and 66.
