In this month's O Scale Trains 2 rail rag there was an article on wiring along the front of your benchwork.
Not wanting to reinvent the wheel I wanted to see how I could adapt that thought to my tight aisle space in my work room where there are long off scene storage tracks mounted on top of a knee wall sorta framed out sewer pipe encasement. The internal void was not accessible to run the wires under the 12' X 19' ledge.
The OST article made me think of how to use this idea without taking up any aisle space around my fabrication table. The only space available was below the 1 x 4 ledger support of my Homosote.
What I settled on was the application of "J" trim for vinyl siding. It is available locally in 1/2" and 5/8" formats. I choose the 5/8" simply because one never knows how much room one may need for future wiring needs and the 5/8" size flushed out to the 1 x 4 quite nicely.
Because the top edge corner beading of the builders kneewall was lavishly spackled I needed to build out the 1/4" flair with 6.0 mm multiply to achieve a vertical face.
Being a typical 2 railer I wanted a wire drop for each piece of rail. The wires were dropped into the void and a hook wire was poked into a 1 1/4" hole to drag it through. These will all be spliced into the respective colored buss.
I mounted the the J so as to provide a slit to insert future wires or to lift out any existing wire. The J is somewhat flexible which makes all this easy. The screws I used for the J are typical metal stud screws.
The inner barbed edge will help retain the wires.
The photos will tell the rest:
