I visited the club during the 2009 NMRA Hartford Convention. It is a large layout with impressive modeling. It is a tribute to the members and to the church to keep the layout going for over 50 years. As a NH modeler, I especially liked the focus on the NH and other New England railroads. I don't understand why the videos are showcasing a SP cab forward with a Pacific Fruit Express train. The cab forward and the train is about 3,000 miles from home rails.
The layout has drawbacks since it was built so many years ago. You can't walk along with your train. People have to crawl on their hands and knees to get around the layout. The layout was controlled by a central cab with a block control system in 2009. I think it would be difficult to run trains using DCC or another command system. Lighting in the basement was poor by modern standards in 2009 for my aging eyes.
The craftsmanship of the models is outstanding. This layout is well worth the visit if you are in the area. I hope to visit again someday.
