Static in sound only when sound is on | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

I have this Baby K-4 in my collection. model#

and it’s made this static sound from day one. I sent it to Lionel and they said it’s a normal part of the sound track For the engine. Some how I don’t believe it because when I mute the chuff I don’t hear it at all but when I ring the bell or horn I hear the static again until the sound stops. Any clue what’s causing this or how to fix? My guess is some kind of short. I pop the hood already to check for obvious wire issues but that doesn’t mean I didn’t miss something obvious to you seasoned pros.

What sounds like static is supposed to be the typical hissing that steam locomotives make, HOWEVER that snap, crackle and pop that you have is not normal.

If you can, I would try another speaker as a starting point.

Speaker, or perhaps wiring between the locomotive and the tender. The drawbar is a frequent source of poor connections.
