Very cool
Pretty cool, looks like something out of Jules Verne
I'm not big on tinplate, but that's one of the coolest builds I've seen.
WOW if those drivers are in O scale, I'll bet they are over 20 feet!!!! Very cool concept though.
Very nice!
Anyone know who made the Sterling Single in the one photo?

That might be David Argent's layout and Stirling single - another project in the back of my mind :
Ah.......different?!?!?!?!
I like the large single drive.....I have the HO scale Thomas/Emily just because it's cool.
This one....a tiny bit too far?
Very different and interesting.
Silver Bullet?
slow that tall driver down on the curves...
Just recently I saw this Strasser drawing posted in a forum response. If I remember correctly it was a response to an argument about Cowcatcher vs Pilot.
The Mordor Mogel:
HUGE wheels............. very cool
Yep, pretty sure the forces would make those drivers into shrapnel in reality, but it's a cool model.
It maybe niches within niches, but would a couple of Steampunk /H G Wells / Jules Verne-ish items get some interest from train manufacturers?

Rodney Matthews is the artist on the Mordor Mogul, 1980s?
Here's another train to Mordor, 3rd album cover of Adult Swims late night comedy/death-metal music show "Metalocalypse" starring "Dethklok".(clock timed math metal/dethmetal, band humor, rock cliché delux)
Did you say Jules Verne? This fella is my fantasy modeling mentor Chris Walas (hover on "menu" for more)
Over the top. This guy needs to be put to work in a design studio.

Do the Lionel Phantom engines / passenger cars from a few years back count? (maybe more than a few)
Seems like a lot of work only to be powered by a 2046 type Hudson motor and wheels.
That spoiled it for me. Also, those little drivers in the back were spinning way too rapidly...
Lest we forget one of the quintessential train-related television series that's probably the father of the steampunk movement: The Wild, Wild West! It's funny, that currently on the Heroes and Icons TV network, the ads for the series refer to West and Gordon as steampunks.
Although the movie was not even a hollow echo of the series, it's also full of steampunk touches.
I guess the Holman Horror stock scam was the inspiration for several of these designs:

I think the funny thing about today's "steampunks" is that none of them are tough enough to be real punks nor do any of them seem to know much about steam.
In a confrontation between a steampunk and a 70 something Robert Conrad I'll take Robert Conrad. He is still tough enough to straighten out any punk.

Oh, you'll get no argument from me! The man did a majority of his own stunts, and had posture enough to balance a battery on his shoulder!
But in all seriousness, the man is simply in amazing shape!

This link has some very cool stuff. It also has some excellent tips on weathering and building. Hover on the menu and hit the "How to" link. Paint, foam, figures - Very good stuff!!!
Blue Angel with coaches:
I like this work. It opens the door to some creative & imaginative fun.
OP by Wood:
I like this work. It opens the door to some creative & imaginative fun.The Phantom is Sci-fi. "the future" not SP at all to me. Good SP should blur eras to the point of confusion.
Yes we have had a run of wild fantasy threads, Names, toilets, "Transformers", Phantom, Aliens, Halloween, Christmas, .
But seriously I've not seen the forum so alive with fresh ideas, and playfulness, even though its not prototypical, it is obviously common ground. A real blast for me, being all over the place like this, thanks all.
Conrad was a Baaaa...d A**(any of you "sheep" get that?)
I agree somewhat to the SP origin. Wild Wild West yes, but with a touch more Jules Verne.
The Coors train is steam punkish, but unless the Phantom has passengers in Victorian dress, it is "just" regular sci-fi. IE, a possible future. Good steam punk should blur the lines between eras "till it leaves you confused, but completely un-harmed"("Hu-ha hu-ha!" Careful with that mic, Clutch)
I really love Chris's "gruffy" style. I stumbled across him on youtube looking for a "space train". Just some toy to pull my Marvin the Martian car. That led me to steam-punk. That led me to...oh, that's what I can post! Futuropolis! And that inspired my "folk-art-deco" loco-rocket".(mmm I kinda like the sound of that.)
Forget it! Lookie here...
Pre-dating, and pretty much blanketing them all, is "Retro-futurism".
Looks like the Chris Walas Futuropolis LA county fair layout display video on Y-tube has dropped. It does have a page or so, under the menu of that link.
My loco rocket for those that never saw it.
The nosecone glows red, the rocket nozzle flashes, & it has a slightly souped-up
smoke unit
Diesel Punk?..yep
Deco punk?....yep
Steam punk?...Could have been, ...but, Nope! No steam rods, no rivets. Just big landing gear
Retro-futurism?...yep, and describes all of the 3 above.

It was there...that may have been pulled for copy write reasons It is a bit recent still. It was a "net grab" I'll replace it soon by adding a link to the image instead.
A tiny bit on Dethklok/Metalocolypse because everything on the show is retro-futurism, although its intent is retro-futuristic death-metal-horror. About 5 seasons of 15min shows.
Dethklok is a band. The time is soon. So popular, they have become the 3rd largest economy in the world. They are not real real bright, but they are mega-rich. Their crews are cursed. If you work for them, you will likely die an early, ugly, death. But would do it for the honor, as the fans are rabid.
They use huge, crazy, menacing, Victorian look machines to travel. Their stages are also vehicles designed to take them away from concerts unharmed. Most concerts end in accidental deaths of up to thousands of fans each show as the music plays out. The band does things like accidently awakening a giant troll by using writings from forbidden sorcerer's scrolls for lyrics at a show. (after much carnage, the band sings it back to sleep with "dis grandpas guitars" [an acoustic])
I think there are two trains for Dethklok. One on the album, one for animation. If you can handle it (gore/adult/violence/language). Its actually insightful, funny, and has a few underlying, long running plots. The worlds more talented metal musicians visit too.
("guest playing" with them on the shows music. They only play with the band. Read the credits to know who played each show)
Some early steampunk-like railroad ideas showed up with the British cartoonist Roland Emett, whose drawings and ideas developed into an amusement park rode and more than one model railroad layout.

Adriatic, even although its not o gauge (well, sorry I had to say that on this forum? heh) I really liked that funny Steam Speed mini-movie
quite silly squabbles the two teams had for each others especially that one at the very ending too
