This past Saturday, the incredible spectacle of two steam powered mainline tours running back to back over Shap Summit on the West Coast Main Line took place. The first train was the "Cumbrian Coast Express" powered by Jubilee class 45699 Galatea. Immediately behind was the "Cumbrian Fells Express" behind 70000 Britannia. As 45699 works upgrade toward the camera position, 70000 can be seen in the background, following along as permitted by the signals clearing behind 45699's train. Impressive stuff.

Did you notice that the first locomotive is a 3-cylinder locomotive? SIX exhaust beats per revolution of the drivers...with nice square valves.

Interesting video, with two very different firemen. The first loco by the camera is being over-fired and is smoking almost constantly, while the second loco runs with a nice, clear stack for the whole video clip. I'm glad I don't have to clean the fire at the end of the day in that first loco. It will be a mess.

I think a few of the 2-10-0s were fitted with mechanical stokers as an experiment, then back to hand-firing; then that was it for British steam.
