I am trying a way to create sand stone from Fimo which is a classic doll house product. I still have to try different texture techniques, so far I used a tooth probe for sculpting. Fino hardens in the oven and can be flattened out with a pasta machine – need to get one. The first test piece looks good, I‘ll keep working on it. By the way the depot is going to be huge!

Sarah, FIMO is a clay is it not? Like Tom Q Fan, I've seen it at Hobby Lobby and have always wanted to try it but didn't know how to use it what it was actually fore. Your stone work looks really nice and I like the way it is coming out. Please keep us posted and keep up the good work.

Another technique: This doll house chimney had a sticky back stencil. The stencil was applied then a stucco like material mixed with white glue was applied. Before the mixture hardened, the stencil was removed.
Brick was done the same. If the paste material dried too fast, it was difficult to remove the stencil. Mortar color is paint applied before the stencil.

Sarah, that appears to be a lot of work with the scribing and texturing but the result is so totally worth it. It looks great. What color are you going for with the stone? Will you be painting the mortar or using the FIMO color?
Now that is very interesting, using a dental tool for fine working, awesome. Quite some time ago I had told one of my coworkers I saw a video of a person using ceiling tiles for shale rock layers. He was amazed and said only a model railroader would see a use for something like that(complimenting a job well done). Thumbs up Sarah.

Looks great.
You may want to consider making a latex mold of that piece as the original. Then, you can cast as many copies as you need with a plaster such as Hydrocal.

Wondering if you have worked on your depot recently. I once had a set of leather working tools some of the texturing tools would be handy for sculpting FIMO. j
This bridge was hand carved into plaster that was laid over the foam structure and then painted. This is some shots of it in process. This was all done by Harry Henning III.

Not unless I can get Harry to spend about a month in my basement and carve it! He spent a lot of time detailing that monster!
Nice work on the stone sculpting. A while back, I posted some pics of an experimental stone wall project using stacked sections of dry wall. The stone texture is already there when the dry wall is scored and snapped.

YES, I think I can just make you out, standing between trusses, with the tool belt. Come to think, tool belts are much better suited for girls than guys. Every time I put one on it slides down to my knees and causes me to trip and fall through the rafters. Not to worry, I always land on my head. And she has an excavator. YOU WIN LADY. You have the best toys. I doubt if any of us guys can top that ! You need a model of your house under construction, with the excavator in the back yard, for your layout. So, Sarah, please tell us you are married so we can all stop "Pining away" for the girl of our dreams. j
Sarah, I guess fixing the "real" roof is legitimate excuse for not working on trains! Keep us updated and be careful .

Sarah, your work looks outstanding, but I do agree with all the 1:1 roof takes precedence! Our petite youngest daughter (the Mendelssohn Choir soprano) would be right in there with the tool belt and power tools. She puts her husband and sister's husband to shame I am here to tell you!
