Staggered illuminates more surface area with less fixtures, your illumination pattern would govern placement. Cities and villages around here make it up as they go or the connected folks want, we have some areas where the lights shining into windows would require room darkening shades at night to sleep.

How long (in inches) is your street?

I would worry more about the overall "look" than the actual spacing. Plus, I would make sure that the illumination when turned on makes sense and gives an even coverage (if that is the plan) or highlights certain areas.

Go to Woodland Scenic web site and look at some of their videos they made using their street lights, that may help.

I tend to place a light at each corner and then space them what looks good going down the street.

Just my opinion, hope that helps.

Each local has different lengths in feet, the average in the Tri-State area is 30 feet apart.  A lot depends on the streets, business or residential.  Business has more at 25 feet apart.  Residential manly has lights at each intersection/corners. And as much as 100 feet apart, as you embrace the street.  The more rural the area, the less lights you will find.  If you bring up city planning/zoning in your town, you will find this information...
