Well, the basement project has stalled (meaning: I haven't done anything with it lately).

So, I thought I would rehash a couple of favorite old projects, though these photos have not been posted before.

Always hate having to follow Vulc with his amazing projects... but here goes!

As you may remember last time, we left the citizens of my Poughkeepsie without a home for the sake of adding this scenic vista:

By coincidence, the same week, the residents of my Schenectady expressed some dissatisfaction with their town which consisted almost exclusively of background flats.

Some of the boys who appeared to be least suited for life in a flat world approached the management about the situation.

Since the CEO of their world could readily sympathize with their plight, a new city arose which combined the best of both old towns with plenty of full-size structures for "the boys" as well as some flats for the "skinnies" of that world.

Don, the wood is colored with what goes by many names, "Sweet & sour mix", "Vulcan soup", etc. It's steel wool dissolved in white vinegar. Then a wash of ink/alcohol. I stained it first.  Thanks!

Beautiful, Steve!

Patrick, you may as well borrow the bait shop, I aint doing nothing with it.  Great work! (I see the white outline).

Great showcase, Guys!

Here are some of the buildings in the town of Beawslaiw on the Brisbane & Bushong RR layout.  The town is located on the SP Coast Daylight mainline somewhere between San Francisco and Los Angeles.  The era is circa 1950.

Jim,

Good use of real stone tile border strips as donord for your sidewalks.  It appears that the Orchard Printing Center sits atop the stone.  Did you use the stone on all four sides of the building to kepp it level?  Do the other buildinghs and the retaining wall sit atop the sidewalk also?

I always appreciate your posts as I learn so much and get ideas.

Joe

Thanks, Joe.

The tiles go under all sides of just about all of the buildings which created paved alleyways of different widths between them. I never try to cut the stone to sizes - too difficult.

I did use some smaller tiles butted up against the concrete barricade along the front, up against the cut stone retaining wall, and along the right hand side of the street leading to the "tunnel" into the backdrop.

I was torn between using cut and painted 1/8" thick masonite squares which would have given a lower and more realistic curb height. But, I had lots of tiles of various sizes on hand, and their texture adds a lot of interest. I did give them a light wash of the same gray color used on the painted "concrete" to tie it all together.
