I am working on a refinery project for a customer in New Zealand. So far the front end is assembled. The crude starts at a two stage desalting tank then goes to a kettle type furnace that is common in Asia (as is the color of the stack). From there the crude goes to the first Distillation tower called CD-1. Product in the form of naphtha exits CD-1 goes through a series of condensers, filter, reflux drums then to product storage. Side streams from CD-1 light and heavy kerosene go to two 'side strippers' (the smaller towers) through some heat exchangers where they are processed and sent on downstream for further processing. Attached to the bottom of the side strippers are reboilers (collect 'bottoms' reheat and send back into the tower).
Once everything is painted you will get a better idea of what is going on based on color of the various piping:
- crude , prodcut etc (TB-8) will be aluminum
- gas piping (TB-4) will be green (sometimes collected and processed for sale, sometimes sent to flare tower for burn off)
- water / steam (TB-6) will be blue
Enjoy
