I am building “Woods Warehouse” from an O scale kit by Banta Modelworks for an OGR Forum friend.  A small, easy-to-build structure, but a model railroad needs all kinds of buildings.

MELGAR

This is a module I have been working on for a few days.  It is just about ready for installation.  There is a small freight station that goes on the upper foundation.  

This view looks North on Railroad Avenue on my 10’-by-5’ model railroad. All structures along the street are built from kits. The street is paved with cobblestones.

On the left:

Saulena’s Tavern (Bar Mills Models) – Gravely Building (Bar Mills Models) – Bill’s Place (Ameritowne) – Lenox Hotel (River Leaf Models)

On the right:

Whistle Stop Diner (Twin Whistle Sign Company) – Phillips Depot (Banta Modelworks)

End of street:

American Flag Company (BTS)

Dave, are those all MTH structures you have detailed in your module?

Yes they are MTH.  They are pretty nice if you get rid of the silly colors and give them a bit of love.  They are very easy to disassemble which makes the easy to paint.

That is an impressive scene with a great interior in Wayside Furniture. The brown colors of everything in the scene create the dingy mood of an inner city, down by the tracks. I have always wanted to have an s-curve like yours, crossing a street on one of my model railroads but have not made it as yet...

Joe, the tank farm looks great, but that is some woodworking bench you have! Table saw is nice too. 👍🏻

Thanks Dave, I agree these and some of the Lionel small town buildings come apart pretty simply for paining with more realistic colors.  What is the white structure in the right of the scene, is that a scratch build?

The structure on the right was scratch built by my friend Stephen Leslie.   I’ve had it sitting off the layout for years.  I’ve had it earmarked for that spot for quite some time.

Thanks!   Here is how far I got today.  It's very hard to get a shot of this.  It's pretty deep in the layout.

Thanks Andy - it is a new Powermatic 10 inch. I had a Delta Unisaw for years then bought this about 6 months ago.

This scene is true artistry, in my opinion. The composition, colors and detailing are superb.

Dave Minarik's railroad is also phenomenal.

Dave,

The MTH buildings are quite modular in construction so they are VERY easy to take apart.  Once they are disassembled, I paint everything.  I will fill in the brick joints with Roberts Mortar or drywall compound then weather with an airbrush.  Sometimes I will do an IA wash on windows and cornice details after they are painted.  Sometimes not.  It is always fun to add some extra details or board up a window.

The approach is pretty much the same with kits, all depending on the kit.

Thanks for that information Dave! I'm always intrigued by your work. I don't yet own an airbrush but am working on it. I would imagine with the right pastels, chalks, powders, and washes I could achieve a somewhat similar effect.
