I've been looking for a Soo Geep in the maroon/Christmas tree scheme, so it was disappointing to see the Soo offering in the newer white/red livery. (Atlas O and MTH have made the older maroon version, but the Atlas one seems impossible to find, and the MTH difficult.)

The pictures may be mockups, but I've never seen a Milwaukee Geep with the Milwaukee Road lettering on the side. There may have been some, but none of the photos I've ever seen had it.

 

Great to see. I added lettering to a Lionel MR Geep because I liked the look, but thought it was not prototypical. Apparently No. 286 either had the lettering added or removed at some point. Here's a picture of it without the lettering (2nd engine). 

I have received a note from Scott that he has added the N&W ""Red Bird" passenger GP9 to the list. 

I would politely ask that you do not post those photos of INCORRECTLY restored passenger GP9's. You could be creating a problem in that the unknowing will start believing the mistakes are real!

I have reserved 2 Redbirds in 2 rail. He has some reservations from at least three of us. More are needed to see this unit produced. Talk it up. I will. Scott also is happy to get accurate  information as to prototypical accuracy (air and water tanks) and needs photos and drawings if available. Color is always a big issue as well. If you have photo detail of the differences and access to a color sample send it to Scott now please. sdmann@3rdrail.com

It depends on the era. 

I seem to recall the large Milwaukee Road block lettering appearing in the mid-late 1970's.  Notice the top photo the locomotive has cut levers that can be operated frm the stepwells and lacks footboards, which were to be removed on all locomotives by 1978.

Glad to help. Even though I am no longer into model railroading at all, after more than 63 years, I'm always willing to help the manufacturers. Scott's beautiful SD7 and SD9 models took no end of collaboration, especially the EMD demonstrator, #990, for which I provided the original EMD Styling & Painting drawings (took the originals to FedEx Office, and they scanned everything into digital, and put it on a thumb-drive, which I gave to Scott at the March Meet 2 years ago).

There has never been a SOO LINE GP7 diesel loco sold in O scale. 

The Soo Line GP7s and GP9s were repainted into the bold SOO scheme rather quickly after the 1962 merger.

Re: the Soo Geeps - I'd be on board for a maroon/gold version, but not the newer white/red. Have enough of those engines already. The following indicates it took about 8 years to get all the Soo Geeps repainted after the '62 merger - not very quick. Some information from another source:

Soo's first GP-7s were delivered in the diesel switcher scheme (black with yellow stripes). The GP-9s were delivered in the maroon and gold road engine scheme, which it appears was introduced with the Soo's F units c.1949-50.

The Soo's red and white with black lettering scheme was introduced in 1962 IIRC. Most early GPs were repainted into that scheme by about 1970. BTW the GP-9s lasted a long time, running on, among other places, the old Minneapolis Northfield and Southern line in the eighties (often with an orange and black ex-Milwaukee MP-15); at least some of them lasted long enough to be repainted into Canadian Pacific red in the nineties.

It appears that all maroon and gold Soo engines had been repainted into red and white by about 1970. A few Soo engines that were in the "switcher" black and yellow (like the AS-16s) stayed in that scheme til retired in the seventies.

Soo didn't really didn't push to chop the noses of it's early GPs. SOO GP-9s  thru the 1980's-90's and seemed to be high nose engines. None were still in maroon, they were red and white and later a few got the all-red scheme. Some high-nose GP-9s were repainted into the CP's version of the all-red scheme.

Has anyone heard if these will have QSI or LokSound decoders?  That could be the difference between ordering in multiples or just one or maybe none for me. I sent Scott an email. We'll see what he says.

Thanks for the info Scott. That is really unfortunate. I would prefer LokSound or even no decoder to the QSI decoder. I'm considering 4 geeps, 2FAs, and 2 F3s. I hate the idea of having to get every single engine to replace the decoder. This is one area where HO is superior, Plug and play decoders are the way to go IMHO.

*** Update- I decided to go ahead and place my order for Geeps, FAs, Fs, PA, and SD40-2s... If I have to replace with LokSound decoders then that's what I'll have to do. Hopefully these engines are spaced out a good bit.  My wallet begs you Scott... please space them out.

I’m still hoping for “support” for Frisco GP-7. Anyone interested please email Scott. I’ve requested twice but won’t happen by me alone. I prefer black model. Might be easy to do as lots of other black diesels. 

Now MP. I prefer GP7 in the original blue and white. I’d like to see the GP9 in Jenks blue. I prefer this as it provides diversity in consist and have told Scott this. What do the MP modelers think. Please send Scott preferences as no colors posted yet. 

Last - MKT. Red - lots of this in many diff diesels. Ok I guess. Not many green with yellow letters and stripes. Green my preferred paint job. Again. Email Scott.

Was meeting with Scott last Saturday to review F3 drawings with Richard and we had a chance to discuss these.  I am SO excited for the CNJ GP7P.  Never been done in mass produced O scale.  Now I don't have to learn how to solder brass to make my Kemtron one into a CNJ version.  Reserving 4 in two rail.

Now for some cars to go with them.   I'm going to end up probably designing them myself and having them 3D printed.

I see the PRR GP7 graphic is the long awaited passenger version with the torpedo tube sir tanks and the equipment boxes by the fuel tank. 

I also have an Email that Scott stated he was making a PRR torpedo tube GP9 but I corrected him the PRR only had three GP7 torpedo tube units #8551-#8553.

I assumed it was a naming error in his email and upped my unit order for the PRR GP7 with torpedo tubes!

I just wished he made the ALCo FA-1 A-B-A units.

I am also really looking forward to the CNJ GP7P, Jonathan.  I have been VERY patiently waiting to purchase a locomotive from Scott/3rd Rail after reading so many good things about them over the years here on the Forum.  Finally there is a diesel locomotive model and road name that suits my interest!

I've emailed Scott asking for the CNJ Geep to also be offered in the as-delivered dual stripe "toothpaste" paint scheme.  I prefer that one so much more than the later "austerity green" (solid green) scheme pictured on their website.  If it has to be one scheme or the other, I hope it's the striped version.  My theory is that it would be much easier to re-paint one into the solid green scheme than into the striped scheme.

Will the 7s and 9s be available in the SF Zebra striped scheme?

The reservation page shows that SF GP7s will be offered in Zebra stripe as well as Blue & Yellow. I have four reserved and have requested units with dynamic brakes. Usually, the number of reservations determines which scheme or schemes get produced. The Zebra stripe is also in the reservation list (where you indicate how many units you want).

If you want the GP9 in Zebra stripe, find a photo on-line and send Scott an email with a link to the picture. He will probably then add it to the list. That is what I did for the GP7 and the photo that appears on the reservation page is the one for which I sent the link.

I have tried this approach (see my post to this thread dated April 15th above).  So far I've had no luck in getting Scott to add the CNJ paint scheme I requested, or reply to my email stating a reason (or reasons) for not wanting to offer it.  This is by no means meant as criticism...I fully realize that Scott is a busy man, with repeated trips to and from China and a lot of other stuff on his plate...and I'm just one person asking for something very specific. 

I also realize that I'm a "new guy" to Scott and 3rd Rail/Sunset.  I have not yet purchased anything from them (and therefore have no "customer relationship" established), so I may not have Scott's ear the same way some of you do.  But now that they are offering both a model and road name that suits my interest, I sure would like to become a customer!  I tend to be quite persistent, so if anyone here has an alternative suggestion/recommendation for how I should make my case/request, I'm all ears! 

The GP7 and GP9 project is coming to fruition. We have narrowed the road names and versions where we have enough orders to produce. We've updated most of the pictures to depict the versions we are going to make. If you've been considering any of these GP7s and 9s, now's your chance to get your order in before reservations close. I want to thank Jonathan and others that have been keeping me steering in the right direction on this project and all the customers who put their orders in to make it happen. It's quite complicated, but we are ready to go into design for each of these versions and then production.

Good news bad news. Sounds like this project is to close quickly. That’s good. The bad part is some roads were whacked. I know - “get off the fence or just have a sore butt”. I lost one “key”, saw some surprise “drops”, and still have at least four GP7-9 options to now quickly decide on. 
However, it would sure be nice to have a “shot off the bow (sp?)” last chance warning posted on the forum - “the following roads do not have enough reservations to be made. Step up NOW or they will be dropped from the run”.  
I’m not whining - I’ve a nice group of choices to finalize. Just sayin. .... 🙂

Generally four road numbers per paint scheme unless the railroad had less.

Train Bub, we would be happy to take your order on cancelled roads. We have been known to run a short second run to fill in stand-by orders or surprise orders. Just let me know what you wanted that was dropped. All the dropped reservations are still in our system under a different project name, GP79b, instead of GP79.

Thanks. Saw that. I've been asking for it, so I better get my order in.   They ran through my home town when I was young. I already have the "fixins" to make a red Soo Line caboose to go with it.

I was greatly disappointed to see that Rock Island was not included in the offerings. I believe there are plenty of Rock fans out there that were waiting for a paint scheme to be shown before committing, none ever was and suddenly RI was dropped from the list. The as delivered GP7  red and black with the "wings"  and silver trucks has to be one of the best looking locomotives. I would even go for the maroon with white stripping now. If interested maybe enough of us can lobby Scott to add the Rock back into the GP7-9 list? I would take a couple units.   jefferson
