We get paid 4 cents a pound for our scrap metal. So you did well, but they did get a higher quality steel. If the track was rusted beyond all usefulness then you did the right thing. Even in fair condition old track sits around at a dollar per section at shows that I attend. Before the economy went sour I would have thought this a sacrilege - not anymore.....
My neighbor sells metal on a regular basis. The only reason it works for him is he has a truck that will haul TONS at a time. We scrapped a old pick up and let him take it along with a mini van the local VFD had cut up as practice. He has a heavy equipment business and also creates heavy scrap with dead engine blocks etc.
