Swapping out older PA shells with Legacy units.

I have seen that the Lionel Texas Special PAs selling for about 300 bucks on some of the big websites. I was wondering if anyone has tried taking the new legacy PAs and removing the shell to replace them with an older shell road name (like the Flyonel Mo Pac, D&RG, Santa Fe, exc...). I would like to give it a try but I need to see if the shells mount the same way to the frame on both new and old units. I know that the old shells would have to have a hole cut or drilled into it to allow for the Legacy units smoke to escape. Has anyone tried this yet?

Was going to attempt it until shown that on the new Lionel PA's, the nose sticks out past the front truck. Not sure if the older ones did this and will attempt to see tonight at a friends house.

The shells are not the same in many ways. I think the modification would ruin a Gilbert shell.

I should have specified, the shells that I am interested in are flyer by lionel, not older Gilbert.

I compared the TX Special to the Wabash Flyonel today without taking them apart. It looks like it could work, but there is only one place where the two shells have a screw hole that would match both chassis.
