Good morning Switcher Saturday aficionados! This is the weekly thread were we show our appreciation for the little locomotives that do the big work of railroading.  While the big units are getting serviced from the latest long haul,  the little loco's sort trains and make actual deliveries,  sometimes navigating tracks so tight they look like real o-27 curves.

Just such a nimble beast has arrived at the Z house!  A Right of Way Industries 0-4-0 saddle tanker, in a glossy Pennsylvania scheme!

20210115_22032720210115_221149

State of the art, 20 years ago😁.  It's a gorgeous little machine,  although it's totally conventional,  and no sound package at all.  ROW did offer a sound effects box car to plug in behind it,  though not easy to find.

This little beast and her crew will work the tight corners and service warehouses,  so that pretty shine may wear off!  Despite an initial oil and grease application it still sounds a bit like a sewing,  which is fine with me!  I am really happy with this new addition.

Here we see a run-by and a picture along side a salvage yard, which is a natural environment for this little beast!😎

As a reminder, Switcher Saturday is open to all scales and gauges, just try to keep your post Switcher related in some way.

All pictures/ videos must comply with the OGR tos.

So please share a picture,  video, story etc.

Have a great weekend everyone!

And a special side note,  Happy Birthday to my son and helper Stephen,  which just turned 7!

Yay SWSat is on track!

First and most importantly I wish a Happy Birthday to Switchmaster Stephen!

This is one of my C16s. I will always be a fan of these little guys as well as the C16A modified engines with more conventional wedge shaped switching tenders. It is hard to believe that there were only 4 actually ever made. I think it probably wins the prize of the most models made of all engines.E36A1521-4CB8-4A27-8A90-BCABE5117735

Here is a NYC S motor that was pressed into service switching some Milk Cars on the far Upper Westside Milk Yard tracks.

Have a great weekend weekend guys I can’t wait to see what you guys post.

Happy SWSat!

Happy Birthday Stephen!

Sweet ROW C-16 Mr. Z

MTH made a version of the C-16 too, nowhere near the detail but still nice little switchers. The 4 prototypes were built by Baldwin for the B&O and ran the streets of Baltimore and Philadelphia. As Andy said, two were converted from tanks and tenders were added. (wiki)

TALES OF THE DOCKSIDER

Oh no!   Another Saturday, another mishap in the Worcester yard.  The yardmaster’s stellar safety record is in jeopardy!

Today NYC RS1 8106 has derailed.  The cause of the derailment is uncertain at this time, although a loose rail joint is suspected.  This was, fortunately, a low speed incident, so there were no injuries.

NYC shop switcher X-8688 was dispatched to tow the “big hook” to the scene.  This will be light work for the hook, so the RS-1 should be re-railed shortly.

jhz, love your 0-4-0 and happy birthday Stephen!

John

I hope all here have a safe and HAPPY SWSAT! and I trust that Stephen is having a HAPPY SEVENTH BIRTHDAY!

I'm putting this pic up again because it illustrates so perfectly the life&times of the EMD end-cab switcher:

        IMG_1723

A pair of Shawmut SW9s just finishing dragging a cut of hoppers under a conveyor belt in a continuous-loading operation. The Shawmut had a small fleet of SW9s, nine in total.

From many years before, caught running-around an excursion train:

         IMG_0130

Seen here earlier that day on the bridge over the Allegheny River:

       IMG_0138

First generation EMD end-cab switchers are memorialized in the ubiquitous Lionel "NW2" (a near-scale stylized amalgamation of various EMD characteristics, even including Blomberg trucks as seen on the prototype MP15):

        IMG_1217

The Shawmut SW9s were built in 1953 with 1200HP V12 567BC engines. The culmination of the EMD end-cab switcher line came as the 1500HP V12 645 engined SW1500, later modified with Blomberg trucks as the MP15DC and finally, (after replacing the DC main generator with an AC alternator) the MP15AC.

Motive power on the PER is one such, an SW1500 in the original iteration with Flexicoil trucks:

         IMG_1492

Quite at home pulling the Scrapyard siding:

         IMG_1509

It is common for this burly workhorse to handle 12 car cuts when working either the East End or West End industrial areas:

All of us here are delighted to see Lee Drennen on the mend and Posting here again.

Have already posted this in some other threads but what the heck. This is Switcher Saturday!

My new Lion Chief + 2.0 0-6-0T switcher. I picked up the Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal version. Really like the color contrast with the black loco and red, white and yellow trim. Runs great, good improved sounds with 2.0 and smokes well.

Need to choose some appropriate rolling stock.

Good afternoon fellow switcher fans!  I'm really enjoying all of your photos, videos, and info everyone.  JHZ 563 thanks for notching out the throttle and getting us rolling today.  I love your new ROW docksider!  It looks terrific! Happy 7th birthday to Stephen too!!

Today on the Free State Junction Railway, the company photographer has been busy traveling around the system and snapping photos of switchers in action.  The first photo was snapped in the early morning hours from atop the FSJR general offices.  Have a wonderful weekend everyone!  Be safe = Be well!!IMG_1738

Snapped from the overhead walkway, the Ma & Pa SW 1 moves up the main.

From the company helicopter, this shot was taken of a derailment on the main.  Luckily no damage was done to the GP 9.  The GP9 and its train was re-routed through Butler Junction. IMG_2915

Suggestion for rolling stock behind BEDT 0-6-0T industrial switcher.

I run my Reading 0-6-0T scale switcher (same diecast model shell as the new LC+ 2.0 version) ahead of an MTH 40-foot Schaefer Beer refrigerator car and an MTH Reading Bobber caboose. Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal Railroad #15 0-6-0T operated on a waterfront yard and pulled 40-foot boxcars arriving on barges to nearby customers. I have a picture of BEDT #14 that shows it pulling four 40-foot boxcars with no caboose. The Schaefer Brewing Company plant on Kent Avenue in Brooklyn was adjacent to parts of the Terminal Railroad. I can't attest to the fact that the BEDT actually pulled Schaefer Beer cars but the two businesses were in the same neighborhood - if not next door. I shall run Schaefer Beer when I unpack my BEDT #15 steamer.

Hello everyone...and a very Happy Birthday to Stephen!!  JHZ thanks for getting us rolling today and great new loco, super detail.  Well leapinlarry - not to disappoint, so here is my input for today.  Its a GE 70 ton, by Marx along with her matching caboose.  Its the one with the maroon and yellow livery that was issued in 1958 only so she is 63 years young!  Still runs great by the way, as I love to make them "go round"...She has a full automatic remote reverse but no light (daytime operations only - )  So here she is...

Thanks, MELGAR.

It appears that there are many good choices for candidates behind the 0-6-0s. I've seen some of the photos posted in other threads showing prototypical operations for these little guys. I don't have switching operations, per se, on my PW style layout but that's not a problem. I've always run what I like. And those beer reefers would look great!

Thanks again for the suggestions.

What's wrong with posting a lionel 41 or a Marx unit? I like my little 41, but they are a bit noisy.

Good morning everyone. Sure was some great photos of your switchers and wonderful stories to go with them all. I wish I would have been able to join you all yesterday, but as usual life has got in the way! But I do want to take the time to say happy Birthday to Stephen and Lou N. Sorry its a day late!
