Mine has the all-too-common broken steps on one side, and I have been toying with the idea of picking up another with all steps intact. If I'm looking for a nice operator-level example that may not be "pristine" per se but has no cracks or breaks, should I expect to pay no less than $200 or so on the popular auction site? Thanks.

I was able to obtain a very nice complete example for ~$100 at a train show. Your best bet on the bay is to find a seller who doesn't know it is a special smoking caboose (and probably doesn't list it as 6557 or smoking caboose) and sells it like any other "old" caboose around $20.
Thanks; I have been trying to do just that kind of search, but it does seem people tend to research & know what they are selling (unlike the early days of eBay).
