Someone is selling a B&O switcher #626. I have never seen this diesel before. Any info on this and the year it was made. I have never seen it in any of my catalogs and I have them all back to 1936. Did I miss something? Don

I think it was from an uncatalogued department store set from '57 or '58

Nice find!
I have one in Ex+ condition and feel lucky to have found it. Pretty scarce. Along with the silver and red Burlington 44-T from the same period, it is the rarest of the bunch. The all -red Lehigh Valley is the most common one.
I've had my eye out for a 626 at a price I was willing to pay for many years. I finally picked one up earlier this year. It is a difficult piece to find.
The 629 Burlington is silver. It's one of those pieces that are difficult to find in nice condition. The silver doesn't age well.
The article on PostwarLionel.com says the 44 ton locos were poor sellers.
Boy, there are an awful lot of 627 red Lehigh Valley and 628 Northern Pacific locos out there.
The 625 black and red Lehigh Valley is fairly common too.
The first locomotive I purchased used as a private sale was a 628. It was also the first locomotive I owned that did not have a scout motor.
