After 8 years I finally found the USTTC Boxcab Electric to head the Great Lakes passenger set. I am one coach car away from completing this set.  The boxcab I picked up is missing one cow catcher and I noticed it does not have a number stamped on it.  Additionally, the color is a little off between the coaches and the engine and the wording on the engine is not as nice as that on the coaches.  Still, it is a beautiful set.

This is a very nice thread. I needed a good tinplate fix about now, since I'm away from my trains for a few months. I did make this video in April before my layouts went dormant for the summer. The top level layout is early American 2" gauge. I do not believe that there are many such layouts in existence. In this video is a York April 2013 acquisition, an early version of the Voltamp short Suburban, hand painted with road number 4711. It is similar to the late short Suburban 2215. It is thought to be all original, one of only two known that were made this way. The loco is pulling an early short Voltamp 2103 Royal Blue Limited 2103 combine that has a wooden floor.

Got the Orient Express set into work today and took it for a spin. Has a bit of a wobble, but not too bad. Biggest issue is it likes lots of voltage. At 18V, it barely pulled all the cars. Was a bit better when I turned the coach lights off. Taking the baggage car out, it ran rather nice. My guess is it wants about 20-22V.

Mine bench tests Ok. Have not had a chance to run it on the track. My portable layouts do not have a wide enough curve. Looks like it needs about 60" min. I'll take it to work next week were we have a 72" outer loop.

Mine was a little jerky when I tried it.  I will try it on larger radius track and see if it makes a difference for me.

Thanks.

I once owned the same Paya locomotive plus a blue version and I was under the impression that they required DC rather than AC, am I mistaken about that?

BTW I have a friend who has had molds made in order to reproduce the cast vestibules and some other parts for Paya passenger cars. If anyone is interested, email me and I'll put you in touch.

No changes to the motor, regular AC. Just had to find the sweet spot with the reverse rod in the cab. Many open frame motors are capable of running AC or DC. Not sure I want to experiment with it.

Just oiled the wheels and put some RedNTacky on the gears. The pilot truck does not pivot well. It hits some stop tabs that stick down. I am tempted to remove the tabs and let the truck swing as far as it wants. The tender and car trucks do not swivel smoothly. I need to look into those some day as well.

Sunrise,

Looks great!  I also routinely pull my Milwaukee Road State cars with a 400e.

In my case I use MTH's black with orange stripe Harley Davidson 400e.  I thought that would be optimum since Harley Davidson is headquartered in Milwaukee and the orange stripe works well with the Milwaukee cars.  That said, if they ever make a Milwaukee Road verson of the 400e, or preferably the 392e since the Milwaukee Road never had any Vanderbilt tenders and 4-4-2 was the wheel configuration of the first Hiawatha "Atlantic" engines, I will buy it in a heartbeat!
