Received a dummy B unit recently from a seller on eBay and the coupler & light didn't work. I opened it up and found the small board (Y4002) disconnected and loose inside. Where does it go please in hopes of my restoring functionality?   Will these boards operate a smoke unit if I install one?

This a Santa Fe scale B unit from 2003 I think.

What's the exact Lionel number for that unit?  I don't think the module will have the larger triac for a smoke unit, but I'm not sure.  Also, if it's disconnected, it could be because it was already dead.  Does the dummy have any antenna for the TMCC reception?  Can you post a picture of the board?

ERR makes the MiniCommander EX for dummy units, it lists for $34.95, and Boxcar Bill here may give you a bit better price. It will do all you desire and may be the path of least resistance to get the dummy working.

From the description on the ERR site.

The Mini Commander EX has a full complement of outputs for supporting dummy engine applications.  Outputs feature support for directional lighting, coil couplers, ditch lights, and a re-configurable output for strobe, smoke, or cab lighting.  Additionally, serial signals are output  for sound systems.

Thanks John.  The number is 6-14539.

I looked at it and noticed that the board would align with the pins on the main board just fine so I took a chance and plugged it in where it appeared to fit. Viola!  It works. Back-up light and rear coupler.

To me, both totally worthless.

Do you think a smoke unit could be added?

Not only could you add one, it originally came with one!   It has an R2LC-C08, so it already has the smoke triac and the control for the smoke unit.

Here's the Lionel Parts page for 6-14539

The following parts appear to be required, and possibly a cable.  I don't see the cable listed, but the board below clearly has to plug into the motherboard.  The funnel and bracket would seem to complete the picture for adding smoke.

I know exactly what you mean John.  Having access to exploded diagrams would of great help to many of us. Sometimes trying to work out how things go together from the parts listing can be an interesting mental exercise to say the least.

At first I was only going to suggest the gasket, as I know from personal experience how important they are. Then I saw the other items were in the same shaded area of the diagram and thought I'd mention those too. Hope you don't mind my butting in, I was only trying to be helpful.

C.sam.  From what you have described above, it sounds as though the R2LC board was the loose item.  I wonder what tales your loco could tell of its experiences?

Heavens, NO!  Butt in all you want, especially with useful information.
