I've always been troubled by the "even" look of painted figures. I know the military modelers have ways of weathering their people.
I had some Minwax stain "Red Cedar" lying around, so I thought I would try something. I dipped a guy in it, just long enough to submerge it, then wiped off as much of the access as I could. On the right is the guy; to the left are two as-yet "un-dipped" folks:
I don't know how well it shows here, but that stain gets into every crevice and certainly tones it down a bit. I hope a shot of "Dullcote" will help with the sheen the stain left behind.
