Hey guys...allow me to apologize right off if this is not posted in the right category! I always associate my Flyer trains with tinplate so I was hoping it would be ok. And I may well be wrong but I thought this image was from the proper time also.

Just thought I'd ask, I saw this on an online auction site recently, it was a big reproduction advertising banner for American Flyer. It got me to wondering about that sort of thing. Does alot of this sort of thing, original signs and advertising banners etc still exist? If so does anyone have any photo's or anything? I love this stuff, just curious if much or any ever shows up....I know enough about it to know I couldn't afford it if I did find it, I thought it would still be neat to see some of it though.

Thanks in advance!

There's a whole sub-set of collectors that collect all the ephemeral stuff such as advertising, posters, catalogs, etc. One of the Forum's sponsors (whose name escapes me) makes reproductions of banners and posters such as this, and offered some at a discount to Forum members who pre-ordered. If you come to York, the Paper Collectors in the TCA have a special meeting to show off their more unusual finds.

This is a reproduction of a window or counter display using similar artwork to your banner.  Interestingly mine does not have any indication that it is for American Flyer.  I have seen other reproductions that include the Flyer name, and I have seen an original of it as well.

I added the 3322 and the 3020 to the display.

I too find the original advertising fascinating, but I don't think I could ever afford the originals either.  I've never seen the banner that you have.  I'm going to have to be on the lookout for one. Thanks for posting it.

That's interesting, when I wrote up this post yesterday, I wasn't sure if there was much of this kind of thing out there or not. It would be fascinating to see photo's of original displays from way back then using these banners! The guys that collect this sort of thing must stay pretty well hidden...I don't often get out of my own little area but some day I would love to attend the York meet, I have always heard great things about it!

Greg, I love your sign also! That is really neat how you added to it. I'm not familiar with stuff like this, but I am familiar with old gasoline and petro advertising and can only imagine what an original banner would sell for, but original or reproduction they'd all be fascinating to see for me.

Alan, Thank you for letting me know about Madison Poster Co...I'll definitely follow them...Thanks for the replies everyone, nice to learn even a little bit about this part of the hobby.

Some 30 years ago I remember seeing the original cardboard display at Renninger's Antique Flea Market located in Adamstown PA. It was well beyond capability of my pocketbook, the owner was asking $20,000.00! I knew the eventual purchaser who shelled out significantly less. He in turn sold it to a party in Iowa who produced reproductions of the display.
