I was fortunate to spend 10 days in Italy at the end of June and a few days in July. We took trains between the towns along the Cinque Terre, a train from Florence to Naples, and a train from Naples to Sorrento.  The train from Florence got up to 189 miles per hour (displayed as close to 300 km/hr) according to the information screen in our car.

I like to build structures so I have thoughts about doing a scene with a station on my base level with buildings lined along very narrow streets terraced on steep hill sides, extending above and below track level several feet.  Tile roofs, brilliant colored stucco, green shutters, dinner tables streetside, and even wooden fishing boats lining one road (Manarola, Italy) extending under the tracks angling down to the lower part of the town and eventually seaside.  Nice to dream.  Lol.  But what loco to run?

Moonson:  I took a bunch of photos, but my son and nephew took many more.  No train photos however.  I know, I know. How come no trains?!!

If you google Manarolo in the Cinque terre and click on images, the photos  are a good representation of the kind of architecture and street scapes.

I do have kind of a train photo in front of a tunnel while waiting for a train. But it was so poor it's not worth posting.

I think my imagination is bigger than my zeal to begin a new train project for now.  It's summer, and time to visit grand kids.  Ciao!

I was in Italy for a while in May, but never encountered a train where I could get a good shot. This is the best RR related photo I could get, in Pisa:

The trains along the Cinque terre run frequently. The tunnel entrances are beautiful. Part of our trip was in Lucca, not far from Pisa. My grand parents were born and lived in Bagni di Lucca until they came to US in early 1900s. Ciao.

In the 70', LIMA and RIVAROSSI have made this model in O scale (1/45e): E 444 of the Italian Railways (FS).

E 444 FS

The RIVAROSSI model is more accurate; you can find sometimes this item on e-bay or auction sites.

But don't forget that TRAXX and TAURUS locomotives of other countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) run also in Italia. MTH has these models!

TRAXX locomotive:

E 482 SBB Cargo

Taurus locomotive:

Taurus DB [Germany)

RIVAROSSI made also this passenger car:

UIC X type FS

You also can visit the web site www.cmfmodels.it for freight cars.

Hope that helps

Joeceleb: Just a thought.  The train from Naples to Sorrento was quite crowded at the time we arrived there. Standing room only. Seemed like 35 miles, and 35 stops.  But the trains along the Cinque Terre and points a little south were not crowded when we were there.  Hope you enjoy your trip and gelato as much as we did. Ciao

You're welcome, Sir.

It's your choice and I respect! but I think it will be difficult to find anything in O scale corresponding to your era!

There is another craftsman in Italia who makes former engines and passenger cars but I don't remember his name!

If I find it again, I will tell you.

Maybe it was Pesolillo? However, he is not from Italy but from the Italian speaking part of Switzerland. He makes very nice and detailed Italian 0 gauge locomotives and cars: http://www.pesolillo.ch/

And Elettren from Italy makes European models including some Italian models. They have made 3-rail Italian models like the E424 electric locomotive and the FS691 pacific type:
