2343 Santa fe not wondering to switch directions after being sent out twice. Newer engine on another track sometimes has trouble. Could it be the transformer or the track. ? Transformer is a trainmaster zw.

Since you are using a ZW with a postwar 2343, the issue likely lies with a mechanical e-unit that needs a little servicing, but you state that you have had it serviced, and that another engine also has trouble.
A few clarifying questions:
*Does the headlight on the locomotive go out while the direction switch is activated?
*Is the e-unit lever tight and remain in the activated position?
*Do you get better compliance if you hold the direction button for a longer duration?
What is the power rating on the ZW itself? Also is it a post war ZW or a modern ZW like the ZW-C or ZW-L? Is the engine a true post war engine or a modern look-a-like?
If it is a newer ZW trying to power a post war engine the newer ZW might be the issue. I know the post war engines love the older transformers and work better with the older transformers. If you update an older engine it might do better with the newer transformer.
Also if somebody worked on your engine who is not a certified repair technician that too can be a problem.

Its a 115 volt 60 cycles 275 watts. One train will switch only with the handle and the other with the direction switch. That's if they will do it all. With an open engine the directional unit does,t want to let go. Like maybe still lower there but lights are off.
