I needed a proper electrical service for my new machine shop so I whacked this pole mounted transformer bank for it using the last of my Keil Line transformers and utility pole parts:

I wired it up for delta-delta with a bonus neutral off the secondary center taps (maybe for some lighting circuits?). Normally I sort of freestyle the wiring on these things but thought it would be cool to give it a semi-proper and believable treatment. I collect old industrial books when I can find them and this was pretty useful to have laying around for reference. It also had all the various wiring schemes and the loading characteristics of each wiring scheme.

Wonder if I should snip the secondary center taps...? I’ll bet MikeCT could tell me! Just thought I’d use them since they were on there. Northbrook Edison could give them a lighting transformer in the basement instead. Hmm.

Old, Delta/Delta transformer banks were usually, 3 wires High voltage, and 3 wires Low voltage. There was no common neutral connection, noted,  Y Primary, Y Secondary, transformer bank wiring, common today.  Secondary, One from each transformer, 240 volt three phase, 3 wire, purpose was three phase motor loads.  You might see a fourth wire from one of the transformer secondaries, as a center neutral tap for 120 volts.  This 4 wire power feed, in a three phase panel, was usually marked, only two of the three phase wires would yield 120 volts.  The third, (high leg), was a much higher, and unpredictable voltage, plus or minus 185.

Thx guys. Dave, the transformers and the spool insulators are Keil Line parts (item #48-133). They were sold as a set of two transformers along with the insulators and a bunch of assorted hardware. Scale City is selling the transformers now but I’m not sure they have them as part of the set Keil used to offer. The raw build photo on my bench is the most comprehensive one I have, the other ones show incorrect wiring on the primaries, oops. The rest of the materials came out of my scrap bins.
