i have a Lionel transformer, type 1033 90 watts, 115 volts , 60 cycles. The posts are 5-15 volts. The alternator current lever on the transformer, does not seem to work. If I connect the train to the post on the transformer, it runs. The train still runs in off position. When I push the lever to increase nothing happens. Any suggestions for possible solutions.

Adolfo: The 1033 is a great transformer from the post-war era. But yours needs an overhaul. You could try to find someone who would do the job but with shipping, parts and labor, it might be rather expensive.
You could just keep it and use the fixed outputs for accessories and such. Then you would have to get another transformer to control the trains on the track. Unless you know what you're doing, I would not advise that you try to fix it yourself.
The 3-15 volt variable voltage posts on the 1033 are the A-U posts. If the black voltage control knob has no effect on the voltage output, chances are the contact arm may have become loosened from the voltage control shaft so the contact arm does not move.
Pull off the 2 handles, take off the 4 binding post nuts, remove the 4 case screws and have a look inside.

You are probably not connecting to the proper posts. For speed control, you must connect as follows:
A - U is for variable track voltage in the range of 5-16 volts.
B - U is for variable track voltage in the range of 0-11 volts.
I believe the "U" post should be connected/wired to the center rail of your track.
If you need 12-14 volts constant for accessories, the nearest available voltage is 16, derived from the A & C posts.
