About a year ago, when I thought I was ready to start laying track, before life happened and put the kibosh to my plans, I bought a bunch of TVS's from DigiKey.

The part number is 1.5KE39CA-TPMSCT-ND.

Is this the correct TVS to use to protect my trains?

Also, is there a thread that details just how to add these to the system, and to the actual loco's?

Thanks,

RWL,

I believe only two TVS sizes have been discussed on this forum.

1) 1.5KE33Ca.  These were the first ones recommended and were for use with command control trains. They are good if your transformers don't produce more than 18VAC, like Lionel's 18VAC bricks (PH135 and PH180).

2) 1.5KE36Ca. The 1.5KE33Ca specs proved inadequate for transformers that can output more than 18VAC, an especially those that use DC for whistle/horn and bell activation for conventional engines. Because the 1.5KE36Ca also works with 18VAC bricks, it has become the recommended size here on the forum.

I have not seen any reference to the TVS size 1.5KE39CA on this forum.  I assume they would work but may clamp too high to protect the electronics.  Hopefully one of our experts will chime in with an answer.

RWL , I checked Digikey with the part number you show & nothing comes up ,i just ordered from Mouser 10 TVS'S & the  Mouser part number is 576  1.5ke36ca if you order from DigiKey just put in 1.5ke36ca & it will come up .

My apologies. I left a "P" out of the P/N.
The correct number is 1.5KE39CA-TPMSCT-ND,

This number does come up. and with only one inline version (Description as follows):
TVS DIODE 33.3VWM DO201AE

1.5KE36CA also comes up but with a boat load of items all with different suffixes.
Which would be the correct one?

Here is the DigiKey page that comes up when I search 576-1.5KE36CA:
If I search 1.5ke36ca only, there are pages and pages of results.

Well one reason would be that the number in the photo I posted is a Mouser part number, not DigiKey.  Try the part number on Mouser.com.  Or here is a DigiKey page with the correct TVS.

I am really not trying to be obtuse here, but that is a completely different part number FC7614CT-ND.
So now I am really confused.

I had posted the Mouser results for 576-1.5KE36CA just ahead of your last response.
Would that be the correct item (The top one of the two)?

Yes.  (Your screenshot didn’t post till now.). Buy enough to use around your layout where power goes to track; xfrmr au,bu,cu,du; at buss connections, and at track connections to be safe.

What about the number that you posted the DigiKey page of?
Where did that come from, and how does it cross over to the numbers that we have been talking about?

That’s a valid part number provided in a past post by a forum member.  I took a screenshot of the page, to have on record.  But, I actually ordered and am using the Mouser TVS.  As you can see on the Mouser label, I ordered 30.  Redundancy is not a problem.  Here is a screenshot of a forum member’s wiring, look closely at all the TVS he uses.  Some say way overkill, but he probably doesn’t think so.

Wow, that is a lot of TVS's.
However, given that he knows what he is doing, which I am only coming up to speed on, he probably doesn't fry anything.
