WBB Ford Panel Van Converted to WBB sedan chassis.  No, really.  It makes a lot of sense.  The panel van is a good scale accurate model of a Ford panel van from a few years ago but comes with unrealisticly large wheels.  Put the sedan chassis under it and it has scale wheels, and it looks really good around diecast models, etc..  I removed the logos on the side of this one to to get this lovely scale model of the generic white panel van - the preferred get-away car of bank robbers everywhere!

Ferrari and Van

Ferrari F430.  Sports cars are very difficult to convert due to the size.  I tried to convert a model of this car about four years ago and failed.  For the life of me I do not know why i could not get it to work then . . .   Maybe I've learned a lot in the past four years, and the WBB chassis is easier to work with on conversions.  Anyway, I've wanted a Ferrari to run on layout for a long time, preferably this particularly model, which I love best among all of them.    It was a rather involved conversion requiring a lot of cutting of both chassis and body, but it went smoothly.  The car runs smoothly, too, and it looks fantastic running down Main Street.

Frank Bullitt has been on the layout for a full year and never turned around.  He's always had is back to the camera here, with his hand on the door handle, about to get into his car.  But today he wanted a better look . . .

Here it is doing a brief pass through downtown.

One very cool thing here if you look closely at about 6 to 7 seconds in, you can see that I managed to get the top of the engine out of the Hot Wheels model I converted and put it in this converted car.  On real F430s, you can look through the rear window and see the engine and its two big red intake manifolds.  Here you can, too.  I'm pretty pleased with how this model turned out.

Do you know what year it would be? I call ed it a Ford because it seems to have more Ford characteristics than anything else.  I've actually spent a lot of time trying to find out exactly what year and model.  If you look at the WBB can in detail, the shape of the front windows and the door handles are pure 1992 Ford: a Dodge has a slight angle to the back edge of the window frame, the Ford is straight as on this model.  On the other hand, the grill looks more Dodge.  The back bumper and rear lights don't match anything i can find.  Since a majority of these made in the Lionel era were labled as Fords (most noteably the Ford Quicklane Truck) , I just called it a Ford.  The grill does loos very Dodge like, around 1992.

That basic Dodge van body was first used in 1970 and remained without major modification until 2013.  It had grille, trim and even different hood sheet metal but the basic body was the same.  I can't really see the grille on the model....but even if I could it more than likely a somewhat generic version. Chrysler licensing is not real easy....so this may have been generic on purpose.

You can see they did not change much over the years.

The Ford from the same era has a much more noticeable 'nose'!

AMCDave - now that you have pointed it out, I think the van is a deliberate hodgepodge of all makes.  The van body profile looks like a Dodge, the grill actually catches some Chevy ones best when you look at it in detail, and the doors, door handles, and driver/s passenger window shapes are right from a '92 ford van. and the rear lights bumper look like nothing i can find.

By mixing it all up K-Line (the body dates back that far) didn't have to pay anyone any licensing fees.  Pretty smart, actually.

Agreed......the licensing thing can be costly in time and money.....

Yes, I hand-painted them.  Painting the wheels on a car helps a lot; for instance if you paint a yellow ring on the wheels of the WBB Taxi's wheels, around the silver "hubcap" you make it look a lot more like a taxi, etc.  I have a whole page on that in the book.

I will always have a soft spot for big vans. The first "car" I drove was my dads 1983 Chevy Beauville. It had the longest wheelbase of any non commercial vehicle chevy made. It was not an add on body with a seam but fully designed like that. The third row seat could fold down into a full size bed without taking anything out. More than once delivery guys offered to buy it at the gas station to convert to a box truck.

Next job Lee should be a van with a big Wizard mural on the side.

Exactly! Look at the still photo!  That is police lieutenant Frank Bullitt  that the Ferrari is about to pass.  Now, he is a cool guy and no doubt would forgive a few miles per hour bit he has an obligation to uphold the law.  And no doubt the Ferrari can probably outrun his 390 Mustang if it comes down to it.  But you know what happened to the guys the last time he chased someone, right?  Would you want to take the chance?
