I've got a Lionel UP #324; item # 6-28038 on its way. I thought it might be cool to add some lettering to mark it for the Oregon Short Line.

Looking at online photos, the marker lights (black) are not the same color as the smokebox (silver), which seems odd to me.

I did some snooping around the web, but was unable to find a good color photo to verify this color difference. I did find some nice pictures of UP Mikado #2537: it indeed shows black marker lights and also the headlight.  The bell is mounted atop the smokebox as well.

Of course, the #2537 is a Mike; whereas the Lionel #324 is a 2-8-0; any of you UP experts have an definitive answer?

Thanks!

First, do you mean the Class Lights, mounted on the front of the locomotive? Remember that "Marker Lights/Lamps" are on the rear of the train, i.e. caboose, or passenger car, or locomotive tender.

Second, the class lights/lamps on the front of the steam locomotive are generally painted black, regardless of what color the smokebox color is. Since those lamps used for class lights are removable, no matter whether they were electric or kerosene, thus they were generally all painted the same, on a given railroad.

Yikes! ...so "black" they shall stay.

Thanks for the clarification; seems I still have a LOT to learn...or at least remember!
