I recently obtained a computer at no cost. Free isn't always good. It doesn't have a serial port nor is the computer able to be expanded. So I'm left with USB. I read Barry's O-gauge companion about using a serial to USB adapter to make the update. I have version 4.2. MTH doesn't recommend doing this way but Barry states excellent results doing it this way. Has everyone had excellent results? Does anyone have results doing it this way with Legacy?

I use this Vantec USB to Serial adapter for both MTH and Legacy, works fine with Windows 7. I can't believe MTH has anything saying not to use the USB adapter, as with most modern computers, there are no serial ports!
I've used USB to serial just like Barry's DCS companion book states and work fine with no problem , what version of windows are you using, I've used windows 7 and 8 work well. You must follow the directions as Barry states exactly or the update will not work!
Good luck, just buy a USB to serial cable as the book states, you can buy them almost anywhere, Ebay have some of the best Prices!

Thanks for the link, Alan. My Radio Shack cable didn't have Windows 8/10 drivers available. Just bought one, plus the plug version.
I didn't have good luck, but I later found out the serial to USB adapter I had was the one recommended by Lionel. It works perfectly with Legacy and LCS.
I have a rev L TIU and later found the correct USB cable to connect to the TIU. That works perfectly here also.
