What is the best methodology to upgrade my older PS 1 engines to rhe current version of PS 3. Is it a relatively easy to accomplish this or is it necessary to send engines off to an authorized service center. Thanks for any info that can be provided.

The kits were originally designed to do just that. You pretty much get all you need in the kit to do the upgrade including lights, couplers, and wiring. A few of the very early engines made prior to 2004 may require a new smoke unit or tach strip. When their website gets up and running you can download an installation manual to see whats involved.

If you are mechanically inclined and understand basic electricity you can do it. If you want a more professional install, warranty having authorized tech do it could be worth your cost. I drill, tap all assembly points. Some follow the kit and just drill holes and use screws and nuts to assemble with hot glue. You would be surprised what I have seen. Some models can be harder then others also. G

Upgrading the 3rd Rail stuff to PS/3 is considerably more involved than upgrading the MTH PS/1 models. Not exactly a 1:1 comparison.

The basics are the same. The idea was to give the OP some idea of what's involved. Its not that hard, and with patience and some basic soldering/wiring skills you can do it yourself.
I could argue that adding a flywheel is less work than changing all the bulbs to LEDs, which you have to do as PS 1 uses incandescents. And for the record, the 3rd rail GP7/GP9 were the only 3rd rail locomotives I encountered that did not have a flywheel. Converting an SD9, O1a (pair), and F3 were relativley straightforward.
Email is in my profile. Yes still doing repairs and upgrades. G
