Is there an economical way to add DCS to an MTH MT-1103 New York Central Hudson? This is s plain item, no whistle or sound, just forward, neutral and reverse. A very basic locomotive.

Just the PS3 steam upgrade kit, which runs about $200.
I recommend having an authorized MTH tech do the upgrade. If anyone other than an MTH tech opens the anti-static packaging, the warranty on the upgrade kit is gone.

There is no basic kit. There is only the complete kit for about 200. 150 if you spend 35 or 50 to join mth club. You needn’t add the smoke, but you’ll want to add the sound. It’s going to be there anyway.
If you think you’re a little savvy with electronics.... I’d spend your $200 bucks :-)
I’ve done 2. They were fun (for me). I didn’t play with the smoke.
otoh. For the price of PS3 installed, you’re darn close to a comparable new loco....
I've done both PS3 and ERR upgrades for myself and a couple friends. I'll be doing a couple of steam PS3 upgrades for myself over the next few months as well. They are not very hard to do if you're mechanically/electrically inclined.
I've done a couple as well.
I've looked into this for my older PS-1 engines and decided it was a better deal to sell them and buy later ones with the 3.5V PS-2 boards after the kit and installation costs werre factored in. I have heard of guys buying cheap RK engines with PS-2 and swapping parts.
I've bought a number of 3V PS/2 RK locomotives for between $75-100. I sell the chassis and shell for $20-25 and use the boards.

No fair! You buy in the store, from folks getting out of O, or trading stuff in!! Otherwise, please share this magic source.
Marty, I buy many of them on the OGR forum in the for-sale section. Gotta' keep your eye out.

Plus, I see them all the time on flea-bay. Like John says, you have to look.
Thank you everyone for the information.
