I have a cheap Lionel GP 38 (6-28868) from a starter set. It was given to me for next to nothing. I was able to fix it and it runs well now. My question is, I now run DCS exclusively. With the right parts and some patience could this engine be upgraded to ps 2 or 32 (when the new boards are released to us normal guys)? I have seen several guys upgrading the Williams engines and was just wondering. Thanks.

If the Lionel engine has DC can motors with flywheels, it can typically be upgraded to PS2 or PS3.
Even if it lacks DC can motors with flywheels, swapping out the motors for the necessary ones can be accomplished, albeit at additional expense.
Regardless, if the Lionel engine is, as you say, "cheap", it may not be worth the investment to upgrade it at all, unless you view the exercise as a hobby project.
Barry is correct on all points. I note that there were some cheap Lionel diesel locos that had "can" motors in the trucks, but no flywheels. These are probably not upgradable.
FDor what it would cost for parts, you could probably come close to buying an MTH PS2 or PS3 starter set.

That was what I was thinking. If I screw it up, I am not out much money. It might be fun just to try! Thanks for the reply Barry.
Goshawk, several months ago I posted a thread depicting conversion of a 1954 Lionel #624 with a Pulmor motor to DCS. Only thing that made it worth while was sentimental value. Cost was over $200, not including the value of my labor. For that price, you could buy an R-K with PS2or3.
