upper level layouts

Has anyone used HO scale on an upper level to give distance to there layout. I have an L shape layout that on one leg I'm going build an upper level and use a rock or mountain scenery along with a bridge. I have 3' area on the turns and about 12" on the straight and length would be about 20'. Any suggestions or advise on staying with O or using HO for depth.

HO can be used very effectively as a forced-perspective device. But don't overdo it. I would keep it mostly hidden, peeking out here and there behind the hills.
