Made for a dust collector unit in a carpentry shop but works GREAT to switch main power on and off via remote control on your layout. The kit cost is around 70 bucks.Plug module into a dedicated 20a 110v outlet then plug 20 amp power strip into switched side of module.Run bricks, transformers etc. They come with 2 on/off remotes and can handle 20 amps.

I use the x10 controllers. With the wireless transceiver and one extra x10 controller you get 2 switchable circuits with a wireless remote that controls both for about the same price. You only get one remote though. With the 2 circuits I can turn on the Legacy base first then power the rest of the layout. The dust collector idea is a good one and I never thought of using it even though I have one in my workshop but it's 240 volts.

Not the exact one I have but this one will handle around 11-hundred watts. You can figure out how many amps it can handle by dividing Watts by the voltage.I know one horsepower is 750 watts and it says 1.5 hp.
Thanks, I use the X-10 stuff here, the term "dust collector unit" was a new one on me.
Would like to learn more about the system, components and use to see how I might apply it.
Thanks,
Bert
One "trick" is to wire the pushbutton switch(s) in the remote/fob into a SC-1 or AIU switch controller. This way you can use your existing TMCC/Legacy or DCS remote to activate the remote outlet(s). Around Christmas Home Depot, Lowes, etc sell the remote outlets for lights with wireless fob for about $10 for a 1-channel unit and $20 for a 3-channel unit.
Here's the link Bert.

This kit will give you one keyfob remote that will control 2 X10 devices and one bigger remote that will control 8 devices. One thing to remember is you HAVE to get the appliance unit for the Lionel command control systems. It has a 3 prong plug on it and works fine with both TMCC or Legacy. The modules set up easily and you can have any number of modules on an address. I use 4 on the layout. One for the command base and the other 3 are for the transformers and lighting devices. I'll add more to control track lighting later.

I have been using X-10 for several years. My only recommendation is that you get the Appliance modules and stay away from the Lamp modules because they are light duty and I have had several fail but never a problem with the appliance modules.
X-10 lamp modules are dimmers and should never be used with any inductive load.
John is right only use the appliance modules with the transformers and command bases. The lighting modules only work well with resistive lamp type loads (standard type light bulbs) as there is a very small current flowing through them when they're off to run the electronics. When used properly with the correct loads they last for a long time. I've been using them for about 15 years all over the house with none failed yet. I run them from my programmable remote in the house.

I use the dust collector remote to power my layout. 3 ZW's and Legacy.
Rock Stars 1989,
Thanks much for the info, I like this Dust Collector remote idea.
Just might purchase one of these for my layout.
FOXCHASERR,
Do you have your 3 ZW's plugged into a plug bar and then the Plug bar plugged into the Dust collector remote unit?

Ladies & Gentlemen,
Was out this afternoon to pick up some stuff at Harbor tools,
purchased one of their home remote units that has 3 different remotes, $21.95.
