One of my boys and his wife were visiting and I showed him the work in progress on my layout rebuilding one end of it to include a small port/dockyard area.  When he spotted this adjustable support column he suggested I share it with others.  He said that he remembered these from when we built his layout back twenty or thirty years ago, but had never seen anyone else using it since.  I am fairly certain that I shared the idea with this forum back ten years or so ago.

Regardless, I've never seen anyone else use it either.  It is a very simple idea that builds a sturdy column or trestle tower that can be precisely adjusted - literally "dialed in" to the exact height needed.  It is so much better than using shims.  All that is required is some wood, a wide PVC screw-on pipe joint, and some epoxy or glue.  With the right joint, you get a colum adjustable up and down over about a 1 inch range.  One or more are very useful when you need to get a supported track or area of the layout "just so."  I suppose you could use much smaller pip joints and make it work for HO and N but I never used it for anything but O-Gauge, as seen here.
