How do you hookup a Lionel powerhouse brick instead of a transformer to a TIU ? I see that you could cut off the end and just use bare wires but how do you tell hot and common since both wires are black ?

I made my own. I ordered the Molex plugs from Fry's Electronics and bought RCA gold banana jacks from Menards for $2.50 a set. Red goes to the center pin. I would not cut the end off.
You can also buy the TPC cable from Lionel and add the spade or banana jacks on the end.

This is what I bought:
CT McCormick Hardware also has ready made adapters, they are called PH-TIU. They may now be about the same price as the ones from ebay. I got some there years ago and they were like $10-$11 or so back then.
How do I know which is red or black on the brick ?

George, this is exactly what I did for my two 180's and 2 135's.
I made up a bunch of these cables to use with TIU.
The .093 Molex, and Banana Plugs No issues in 4 years now.
I have a Fry's right down the road, so I'm always there playing

Jimmy,
On the PH-180, red is middle, black is bottom. The top slot is empty.

Same for the PH-1/135.
I bought the adapter from McCormicks mentioned by RTR12 part number PH-TIU they are $15.00 plus shipping.

The neutral wire is marked or ribbed. The hot is smooth.
In this case, you can follow the smooth sided wire to the pin for the center terminal.
Don't cut the connector. Purchase or make an adapter wire.

That's what I bought.. It was simpler for me to buy this instead of rounding up all the parts to make one myself..

I did the same thing as you all, for ease of connection and not having to cut off the factory plug. Actually I tried to order the Lionel wiring adapter, but they were out of them and I got tired of waiting. Found the ones from CT McCormick, ordered and was in up and running a couple of days later.
The ones from CT McCormick are very nice, well made and have good quality banana plugs and wire on them. At least that was true when I got mine which was shortly after I got back into the hobby in 2011 after a LONG time away. I have not seen any of the ebay adapters in person so I can't comment on their quality.
