To add to what Dave said . I used the AZATRAX D2T-DS. You get 2 pairs of I.R. sensors that can reach over 2 tracks, and sense trains in either direction.

Economical and works like a charm, not to mention "easy peasy" for an electronics novice like myself.

John Parsons from Azatrax is very responsive to emails should you have any questions .

You can just barely make out one pair of sensors at the end of my video:
